A quiet interior is not an empty one. It is a space where materials agree with each other, so nothing competes for attention.
Three materials per room
We limit most rooms to three main materials: one for the floor, one for the walls and one for what you touch, such as handles, worktops and joinery. Fewer joints between materials also means fewer places to fail.
Texture over colour
Instead of contrasting colours, we use contrasting textures: rough stone next to smooth plaster, oiled timber next to brushed steel. Light then does the work of showing the difference.
If every surface asks to be noticed, none of them will be.
