The Role of Proportion

Notes on scale, repetition and the measured relationships that make a space feel calm.

Proportion is the part of architecture that visitors feel but rarely name. A room can have perfect materials and still feel wrong if its height and width disagree.

A simple module

Most of our buildings use a single module, usually 60 centimetres, from the structure down to the shelving. It keeps decisions consistent and makes coordination with builders much easier.

Repetition with variation

Repeating the same window or column creates rhythm, but too much repetition becomes monotonous. We break the pattern only where something important happens: an entrance, a view, a place to sit.

Good proportion rarely draws attention to itself. It simply makes a space easier to be in.
