Designing with Natural Light

How orientation, depth and reflection allow daylight to become a central architectural material.

In central Brazil, the challenge is rarely getting enough light. It is getting the right light, at the right time, without the heat that comes with it.

Orientation first

Before we draw a single room, we map the sun across the site for every month of the year. Living spaces go where morning light arrives, and service spaces protect the west.

Depth and reflection

Deep roofs and verandas push direct sun away from glazing, while pale floors and ceilings bounce soft light further into the plan. The result is a house that is bright inside without ever feeling exposed.

  • Model the sun before the plan
  • Shade glass, not walls
  • Use pale ceilings to carry light deeper
  • Keep west openings small and high
